Introverts are thinkers and not talkers. Being in a team with or working with introverts can yield great results and can be a very rewarding experience. Contrary to popular belief, introverts can thrive in any work environment as they quickly master the ability to study their environment, understand the work they need to get done and find peace within themselves while doing their work. They make very lovely team members and are great innovators as they are very thoughtful, pay very close attention to detail and make very few mistakes due to their ability to focus on their work.
Introverts are particularly very skilled with the ability to solve complex tasks as they are great thinkers. Leaders as well as team members who understand human temperament as well as understand that an introvert needs to be able to have an uninterrupted time where he or she can focus solely on the work to be done , will get the best results from introverts.
Research has also shown that introverts prefer written communication over spontaneous conversations. Due to their quiet nature, introverts think faster than they talk. They usually come up with the best ideas and fact-based investigations if given a little time to withdraw and think things through. Introverts usually think deeply before responding and it’s always very beneficial when they are given a notice in advance anytime their input is needed on a complex subject.
Unlike extroverts, introverts do not usually seek attention or recognition even when they accomplish so much in any team. A great leader should therefore seek for avenues to offer them some praise in private and appreciate them for their contribution. A great way to make this “private praise” session happen would be to regularly hold one-on-one meeting sessions with them and verbally affirm them. Team representatives or team leads should also be encouraged to be the voice of the introvert when necessary.
An inclusive environment where different communication style is respected should be encouraged and the opportunity for solitary work once in a while should not be frowned at. Introverts should not be loaded with social events and their ability to attend group activities or social events should never be used as a yardstick for measuring their performance at work. Introverts can sometimes find social events draining and they often prefer interacting with people individually (one-on-one).
Introverts are greatly needed in all industries as they are the innovators and thinkers. They are very structured and organised people which makes them a great addition in any team or project. They are particularly needed in fields such as software development, engineering, medicine, aeronautics engineering and a host of other professions that require a great deal of thoughtfulness, expertise and precision. Introverts also have great soft skills and are usually given to sharing their knowledge as well as helping other team members grow.
